PRACTICAL CONVERSION GUIDE
Flat Chest Width vs Body Chest: Reading a Chinese Size Chart
A shirt chart says 胸围 52 cm. If 52 cm is the width across the shirt laid flat, its chest circumference is about 104 cm. First check how the seller measured it.

Three different measurements can share one label
胸围 means chest or bust, but a product table may use it for the wearer's body, the garment's circumference or the garment's flat width. The heading alone does not tell you which. A 52 cm half-chest width and a 104 cm circumference can describe the same shirt; a 104 cm body reference describes the person the chart is intended for.
Look for a measuring diagram or a note such as 平铺测量, meaning measured laid flat. Even then, check whether the seller has already doubled the width before entering it in the table. Doubling a circumference again would turn a 104 cm shirt into an imaginary 208 cm one.
UNIQLO's official sizing guidance distinguishes body measurements from finished-product measurements. Use that distinction when reading a marketplace chart, then follow the measuring instructions for the particular item.
Which measurements should you double?
| Label | Usual meaning | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| 胸围 | Chest or bust | Body, full garment circumference, or flat width? |
| 腰围 | Waist | Body range, relaxed garment waist, or stretched range? |
| 肩宽 | Shoulder width | Which seam points does the diagram use? |
| 衣长 | Garment length | Where does the seller start measuring? |
| 平铺 | Laid flat | Does the table give widths or already doubled values? |
Double a chest or waist width only when the seller confirms that the number is one half of the garment's circumference. Shoulder width, sleeve length and garment length stay as measured. For an elastic waistband, also check whether the listed width is relaxed, stretched or a range.
The 52 cm shirt: a complete comparison
Here is an example using a 96 cm body chest and a shirt with a confirmed 52 cm flat chest width:
- Convert width to circumference: 52 × 2 = 104 cm.
- Compare garment with body: 104 − 96 = 8 cm of total chest room.
- Keep the labels when converting units: 52 ÷ 2.54 ≈ 20.47 inches of flat width; 104 ÷ 2.54 ≈ 40.94 inches of circumference.
The 8 cm difference measures room around the chest. It does not tell you whether the shoulders, sleeves or hem will suit you. Fabric and cut matter too: a stretch knit and a lined woven jacket can feel quite different with the same chest difference.
For a second check, measure a similar shirt you already wear comfortably. Suppose it is 54 cm across at the same points. The proposed 52 cm shirt is 2 cm narrower laid flat, or about 4 cm smaller around the chest. That gives you a useful comparison before you decide whether the smaller garment suits the intended fit.
A question you can send to the seller
If the listing is unclear, ask:
请问胸围52厘米是平铺单面尺寸,还是一圈的尺寸?这张表是衣服实测尺寸,还是适合的身体尺寸?
In English: “Does chest 52 cm mean the width across one side laid flat, or the full circumference? Does this table show the garment's actual measurements or the recommended body measurements?”
Include the item and selected size in the message. A shop can use different charts for different products. Keep the reply with the chart, especially if you will later compare another size or discuss a return.
Compare the rest of the garment
For a shirt, check chest, shoulders, sleeve length and overall length. For trousers, compare waist, hips, rise and inseam. Measure your own garment from the same points shown in the seller's diagram, without stretching it unless instructed. A dropped shoulder or raglan sleeve may need a different comparison from a conventional shoulder seam.
A code such as 170/92A adds body-reference information: 170 cm height and, for a top, 92 cm chest. It does not mean the finished top is 92 cm around. The clothing-code decoder explains those numbers separately from garment dimensions.
Check the arithmetic in the comparison tool
Open the body and garment comparison tool. Enter body circumference 96, seller measurement 52 and select confirmed flat width. The result is 8 cm of chest room. If the seller instead gives a full circumference of 104, select that measurement type and enter 104; you should get the same result.
Use the chart translator for unfamiliar Chinese headings and jin weight ranges. Once the measurements are understood, compare the seller's actual rows. A letter such as L is useful for selecting that row, but it cannot supply the missing measurements.
